The Wonderful World of Campus Recruitment

In my last post, I mentioned that we had tricks up ‘our sleave’, but I didn’t really say what those were. Mostly because at the time, a lot of things were coming together…in ‘incubation‘, you might say. Today I am happy to report that TalentEgg has evolved significantly since my last post, and we have lots to report.

In a very short while, and in the midst of some tricky economic times, we have managed to accomplish quite a bit:

  1. We launched The Incubator: The Incubator is an online, social career magazine providing personal and specific career advice, tips, and stories. So far, we have a team of over 10 amazing contributors and one particularly awesome editor (Cassandra!). Look out for our first ‘digest’ at the end of this month. The theme? “The class of 2009: Graduating in a recession”.
  2. We got involved with a very exciting video series through UTours. Still in production. On the topic of The Job Hunt.
  3. We began booking some serious speaking engagements. Over the next few months I will be presenting for The Conference Board of Canada, The Campus Recruiting Forum, and CHAT high school (:)), as well as putting on two 3-hour workshops on the 4 generations in the workforce in Newfoundland!

And this is all aside from the great content that is continuously popping up on the main TalentEgg.ca site. Today we were talking about how we have so many ‘Recent additions’ to TalentEgg on a weekly basis that we’re going to have to add a scroll bar to that section of the site!

Significance:

  • With the addition of The Incubator to the TalentEgg family, we’ve gone from being ‘like a campus career fair, online’ to being ‘like a campus career centre, online’.
  • With the launch of a media outlet geared at 18-24 year olds (The Incubator), and the launch of our consulting/speaking projects, we’ve gone from being a 1-product company to a 3-product company.

Charging into the Future – TalentEgg has tricks up its sleeve

If you haven’t noticed, the whole world is talking about the recession. Even we’ve covered it here on TalentEgg. And over the past weeks we’ve dealt with a hard reality- things are changing.

So what’s up with TalentEgg? How are we dealing with this new economic uncertainty? How do we make ourselves recession proof, continue to grow our audience of Gen-Y career seekers and continue to help employers brand themselves effectively to that audience?

Well, the answer can be found in the title of this entry- we charge into the future.

For TalentEgg, that doesn’t mean spending lots of money on advertising, but instead on continuing to be innovative in our…innovations…and inventions….and increasing our intensity when it comes to making new connections.

One place where we’ve realized we can make a big impact is in communicating what we learn from employers to our audience of students and new grads.

Advice, information, resources are incredibly important for 2009 and 2010 grads, and TalentEgg is in a unique position to provide first-hand information to that audience. We speak to entry-level/student employers all day, every day. So we happen to have quite a good idea of what the recruitment ‘market’ for students/new-grads is really like.

In order to convey that information more formally and effectively, we’re launching our brand new Career Resource Centre in the next week. We’re looking for contributors and are even considering syndicating other high-quality resources. If you’re interested, give us a shout.

On the employer side, we have made a commitment to increasing intensity by 100%. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. (I’m slightly embarassed to have used such a cliché but…oh well :)).

Look out for us over the next few weeks and months in the press, at HR-related events, and- if you’re an employer– in your office showing you or one of your colleagues some of the benefits of getting involved with TalentEgg.

If you’re a student, what does this all boil down to? More resources, more access, more transparency in the search for your first real job.

Young Business Leaders Unleashed- CYBF gets $10M grant

When I started my business (http://TalentEgg.ca– career site for Gen-Y), I received a loan and coaching from the Canadian Youth Business Foundation (CYBF), and it is an association I am very proud to be a part of-they provide loans and coaching to hundreds of young entrepreneurs across Canada. I’ve written about my experience with CYBF on this blog before, and spoken about it at various events as well. It really has been an invaluable resource in both its formal activities (my mentor and my loan), as well as informally (the great people I’ve met through the program).

I am especially proud today to announce that CYBF was granted $10 million in today’s federal budget announcement.

This is especially relevant and important given the current economic conditions and the fact that this grant is projected to create 800 new businesses, 5000 new jobs, $135 million in sales revenues and $32 million in tax revenue within 5 years.

As I’ve always maintained- Gen-Y isn’t lazy– we might even play a big part in kick starting the economy with the help of programs like CYBF!!
