TD's The Hunt – a 360 view on finding a great job

Over the past several weeks (months?!) we have been involved in a video series called The Hunt, sponsored by TD.

The Hunt is about job hunting for students and recent grads.

When thinking about resources for students and recent grads, I have always been adamently against objective advice. That sounds weird, right?

But what I mean by that is that I don’t think there’s particular value in ‘Top 10 ways to write your resume’, or ‘3 ways to ace an interview’.

Where I do see value is in sharing life experiences, and learning from the life experiences of others. So instead, you get ’10 ways I made my resume stand out‘, ‘3 ways I aced my finance interviews‘.

And that’s why The Hunt is so cool. Instead of presenting only the point of view of the sponsor, The Hunt tackles issues such as Resumes, Interviews, Job Searching, and Networking from 4 different perspectives: Students, Employers, Career Centres, and Experts.

i.e.

  • You get the first hand ‘I’m going through this right now’ perspective. (Students and Recent Grads)
  • You get the first hand ‘I’m actually screening these students and know what I’m looking for and who I hire’ perspective. (Employers)
  • You get the first hand ‘My day job is to know everything about these topics’ perspective. (Career Centres)
  • and You get the first hand ‘I sit in the middle- I deal with both employers and students on a daily basis’ perspective (Experts)
  • We, along with several Incubator contributors, are very happy to have been involved in this great series!

TalentEgg and Workopolis and Craiglist…oh my

We’ve reached a new milestone, and with mixed but mostly funny (in a good way) feelings.

In this week’s Toronto Life Magazine, Katrina Onstad has an article called “How to get ahead in a recession”.

In one part of the article, she writes something along the lines of:

“Instead of submitting resumes through services like Workopolis, Craigslist and TalentEgg….”

(I would have used a real quote but the article isn’t online yet!)

Now you have to understand how eggciting this is for us. As much as we are not a job board in the same way that Workopolis and Craigslist are (and in fact, we usually adamently oppose any such comparisons), it is so cool to be included in the ranks of such successful career search services.

Thanks Katrina 🙂

TalentEgg experiences growing pains, has to add 'B' to Ryan's name

At TalentEgg, our email address structure is very simple: firstname@talentegg.ca.

This week, our second Ryan has joined TalentEgg..and completely ruined everything.

The good news is that he’s actually great, and he even has an accent (!!)…And he already knows everything about TalentEgg because he’s worked with us before.

So I guess it’s not SO bad.

Without further ado,
Ryan: Welcome to TalentEgg! You are hereby known as RyanB.

I'm home sick, but [embarassingly] can't escape the EGG puns

After 2 days of feeling kind of, sort of sick, this afternoon I finally decided to take off and go home to rest.

[This is the embarrassing part]

I’m watching the Family Channel.

And I’m watching a show starring a Dog and a Dragon (as you do, when you’re 25).

And the entire episode is about finding some sort of special egg!

And the egg puns haven’t stopped. Here I provide you with a sample:

“no, the egggggg!!!” (when they lost the special egg)

“we’re too late, it’s sunny side up”

“the egg plan is scrambled, master”

….and then:

“mission eggcomplished”

“that’s all, yolks”

“time to make our eggcit”

I must say, I’m upset that I didn’t think of some of these myself. Look out for these and other egg puns in future e-mail and spoken communications.

‘Til neggst time.
