Poll results: What is most important to students in a summer internship?

With many students soon starting their summer internships now that classes are over, we recently featured a poll on our homepage that asked:

What is most important to you in a summer internship?

You might think that “high pay” might be most important to students considering all the hype about student loans and unpaid internships these days, but it actually came in a distant second:

Only 20% said high pay was most important.

It turns out that “meaningful experience” tops earning big bucks:

Nearly two thirds of students (59%) said it was the most important thing to them in a summer internship.

The three other options each received a small share of the votes: 11% said the reputation of the employer was the most important; 6% chose mentorship as most important; and only 4% said a flexible schedule was most important to them in a summer internship.

Employers

Do these results mirror the strategies behind your summer internships? With the vast majority of students seeking meaningful experience during their summer internships, will you provide the experience they’re looking for? Or are you going a step further by offering meaningful experience AND high pay?

Poll results: When do students start looking for summer jobs?

We recently featured a poll on our homepage that asked students:

When did you start looking for your next summer job?

While a little less than one third of students (29%) said they were pro-active and started looking for their next summer job before the holidays, the vast majority – two thirds (67%) – of students were summer job hunting during the polling period, from January 21 through March 28.

A small minority of students, just 4%, said they weren’t going to start looking for their next summer job until later.

Employers

Do these results match up with the periods during which you recruit students for your summer jobs?

Students

What do you think about these results? Have you experienced any success summer job hunting in January, February or March, or do you think the best summer jobs go to students who start searching in the fall?

Today we start a new poll the homepage, asking: What is most important to you in a summer internship?

TalentEgg's "medieval" holiday party

So, last year we had our first company holiday party and it was pretty low-key. Some food and drinks and gifts at Daniel’s apartment. It was nice, but this year we wanted to kick it up a notch.

Naturally, our first choice was to go to Medieval Times. Nothing brings on the warm fuzzies like a bunch of dudes with ponytails trying to kill each other while on horseback.

All in all, I think it was a success. We drank beer out of plastic holographic cups and ate a three-course meal with our hands. What else could one possibly want from a company holiday party?

Next year, I think we should aim for Disneyland.

Wondering what to wear to your next job interview?

If you’re doing some back-to-school or job hunting shopping this month, Lily says the must-have item for men, women and dogs alike is a pink v-neck sweater with a white blouse underneath. Check out the fashion shoot below.
