While TalentEgg’s Campus Recruitment Excellence Awards and Conference had a decidedly Canadian focus, Universum‘s Marketing Manager, Americas, Jonas Barck, brought a unique global perspective to the event.

He presented survey data from over 400,000 students worldwide to help employers understand what is most important to students in terms of employer brand as they choose which organization to start their careers with.

He used the survey data to illustrate how students perceive employers such as Apple and Google as being highly associated with not just some but all of the attributes students look for in employers.

Some interesting global comparisons from Jonas’ presentation:

  • While business students in the U.S., U.K. and France say their #1 career goal is “To have work/life balance,” Canadian business students are more interested in being “secure or stable in my job”
  • Canadian engineering students are more interested in becoming a technical or functional expert than students in the U.S., U.K. or France, ranking that goal #3 when students from the other countries didn’t rank it in the top 3 at all
  • Canadian students place more importance on “Employer Reputation & Image” than U.S., France or U.K. students, and much less importance on “Job Characteristics”
