For many organizations, internships and co-op work terms are important not only for getting day-to-day work done but also for evaluating and preparing students for entry level roles, as well as building a strong employer brand on-campus.

The key to achieving those goals is, of course, to provide a great experience, but it can be difficult to adjust your program unless you know exactly what’s working and what’s not. Collecting feedback from students about their internship or co-op experience with your company, therefore allows you to identify successes and failures each year.

This information is vital to any company as “satisfied workers are engaged workers” says Tara Fowlie, HR Business Partner at Bayer CropScience.

Next week at the 2013 TalentEgg National Campus Recruitment Excellence Awards and Conference in Toronto, Tara will be sharing how Bayer CropScience created an internship program with a 99% satisfaction rate, how to effectively measure success, and how positive/negative feedback can affect your organization.

With the egg-ceptional success of the company’s Summer Associate Program, Bayer CropScience has been able to improve their employee satisfaction rates, build campus ambassador programs and drive word of mouth on-campus about what they have to offer potential employees.

Bayer CropScience’s Summer Associate Program is also a finalist in the Best Internship/Co-op Program category of the 2013 TalentEgg National Campus Recruitment Excellence Awards. Winners will be announced during a special awards ceremony at the conference on May 14th.

Until then, here is a sneak peak at what you can expect from Tara’s presentation in just one week’s time:

Your presentation will explain your internship program’s 99% satisfaction rate – what other data should employers be collecting from their interns/programs to measure success?

Tara Fowlie: We do a full third-party exit survey that measures many things:

  • Demographics
  • Number of summer terms
  • Work experience engagement
  • Work experience management
  • Expectations and compensation
  • Health and safety in the workplace
  • Overall satisfaction
  • Would they consider returning for another summer term?
  • Would they consider us as a future career choice?

Why is it important for interns to be satisfied with their work experience?

Tara Fowlie: Satisfied workers are engaged workers.  High engagement drives productivity and innovative work, and people are generally more committed and motivated.

What can conference attendees expect from your presentation?

Tara Fowlie:  I will go into why we have a Summer Associate Program in the first place and give an overview of the program.

I will give some insight into our agriculture and people challenges, and discuss how we recruit as well. I will also provide some insight into items beyond the summer experience.
